Master Your Next Teaching Interview

Common questions, what headmasters look for, and how to present yourself confidently.

Interviews for teaching positions can be daunting because they assess both your technical subject knowledge and your interpersonal skills. Below, we’ve compiled the most common questions asked by school administrators in Ghana and how to approach them.

Q: "Tell us about your teaching philosophy."

What they want to know: Are you student-centered? Do you believe all students can learn? How do you approach the classroom?

How to answer: Avoid buzzwords without substance. Provide a clear, concise statement (e.g., "I believe in facilitating learning rather than dictating it.") and back it up with a quick example of how you apply this in your classroom through group work or project-based learning.

Q: "How do you handle disruptive behavior?"

What they want to know: Do you have strong classroom management? Are you proactive or reactive? Do you rely too heavily on administration for discipline?

How to answer: Outline your step-by-step approach. Mention setting clear ground rules on day one, using positive reinforcement, and addressing minor issues non-verbally before they escalate. Give an example of a time you successfully de-escalated a situation.

Q: "How do you differentiate instruction for mixed-ability classes?"

What they want to know: Can you support struggling students while challenging advanced ones?

How to answer: Discuss specific strategies like tiered assignments, flexible grouping, and offering varied assessment methods (e.g., allowing a student to do a presentation instead of a written essay).

General Tips for the Big Day

  • Dress Professionally: Standards in Ghanaian schools lean conservative. Dress neatly in professional attire.
  • Bring a Portfolio: Have copies of your CV, teaching license, lesson plan samples, and any student success metrics printed in a neat folder.
  • Ask Questions: Have 2-3 questions prepared for the interviewer (e.g., "What professional development opportunities does the school offer?"). It shows you are engaged.
